Storm Radars

One of the solutions that enable prediction and observation of weather phenomena are weather radars called Doppler ( Doppler effect means changing the frequency of the signal reflected from the object if the object is closer or farther from the radar.Source wikipedia. ) . They work in the same way as other types of radars such as military radars , etc. The meteorological radars send an electromagnetic pulse in the narrow beams and receives the reflected waves from objects in the atmosphere , such as water molecules (the clouds) precipitation also including those on the move like winds. The basic parameters of the radar are: wavelength , resolution , range , scanning strategy , power .

Storm radars cover approximately 80% of Poland , which is 250 km around the station if it comes to clouds and precipitation , and around 50% if it comes to wind .

Radar network in Poland is still insufficient. The most " neglected " region is Masuria that has a warning system for sailors from sudden changes in weather .Unfortunately the data are collected from radars that don’t cover that part of Poland.

There are eight such devices in Poland collected in the POLRAD system . The data is sent directly to IMWM where they are analyzed. Radars have been installed in Poland in 1995-2004 and since 2009 the network has been modernized by exchanging radars by the newer ones with radar dual- beam ( more information can be found on Wikipedia . ) The list with radars location of POLRAD system:
